Cerro Piene Traverse, PN Alto Rio Lircay, Chile

We began out on a day hike to the 'El Endrillado' plateau, but at the highpoint about a quarter the way in, I spied a fantastic looking cirque and a ridge that just begged to be traversed. While Steph and George continued on the original trip, Mike, Andy and I had a fantastic scramble on great rock. There wasn't too much exposure and there were only a handful of tricker sections to negotiate, but overall it was a interesting and varied scramble that culminated at the summit of an unammed peak with increadible views all around.
The crew at the campground, raring to go for tommorrow's tramp

And we're off! Walking at first light after a pre dawn start

Mike climbing through the trees on our way up

Views of the Upper Rio Lircay and the Chilean Andes

Andy scrambling through a tricky section

Mike concentrates..

We had to bypass a few sections of firm snow on the ridge,
as we had no crampons nor axes

Great rock, great air.
Crossing moderately firm snow to avoid a
tricky and exposed section of ridge crest.

Taking a rest on a mellow section of ridge

Mike exits the chimney climb on the final steep section to the summit

Just below the summit, the clouds start to roll in

Descending as the clouds build

Up and over a gendarme

Down moderate slabs towards easier ground

Descending towards the Laguna for a well deserved dip.
