Coronet Crag, Queenstown

Cindy and I made our way slowly into Te Anau to try and meet up with Travis and Romaric who had just returned to civilization after a successful attempt on Mt Cooks Grand Traverse.

Leaving the others to their adventures, we drove out to Queenstown with the aim of doing some multi pitch routes on the Remarkables to sate our desire for alpine adventures. Cindy’s leg however, had other ideas. She wasn’t sure what she’d done to it, but it was really giving her grief.

On Belay from the driver’s seat..

Tossing up ideas for what to do, we eventually arrived at Coronet Crag for a little bit of sport climbing. Queenstown’s original crag, it was developed by Dave McLeod as an instructional crag. Being close to town and right on the road (belaying from a car would be possible, but not advisable) it is very popular for those wanting a quick fix when time is limited.

I lead ‘Hung, yawn and quartered’ (15), which was a little interesting given the thick coating of Schist Dust over all the rock. Cindy had a go at top roping the climb to test her leg, but had to give up in agony about 2/3 the way up.

It was clear that this was the end of the holiday for her as far as adventure sport goes. Not one to fluff around, she returned to the car, changed her flight and booked a bus to the airport the next morning!

Now I just had to figure out what to do with myself for the next 5 days…..

We ended up camping at 12 Mile Creek where we had a swim and a gear sort. Luckily we met Steve and Andrea by complete chance just short distance away. Together, we had an enjoyable dinner and were able to offload a fair bit of excess luggage into their wagon.
