Granity Creek, Mt Owen

At the unprecedently early time of 9am, we were climbing up the Granity Hut ridge track on our way to the Granity Ck Canyon.

After about an hour, we dissapeared off the ridge and spent 60 minutes thrashing through steep storm ravaged Beech forest to reach the Creek.

Suiting up, we wandered down the stream for about 2 hours before the canyon began. On the way there were a handful of nice rappels and small jumps to keep us interested and prevent overheating ;0)

The canyon began abruptly after a lovely twin cascade with two pitches back to back.

Once in the canyon proper, we marvelled at mini-bus sized chockstones wedged 30m above our heads and a further 40m of vertical canyon wall higher up.

The first slot was quite horizontal, with a couple of downclimbs and handlines before we emerged back into the daylight.

Not far away, a larger pitch into a huge punchbowl marked the entrance to the second shorter narrows section.

Popping out to a big pool with a resurgence, we scrambled only a little further down the open stream before reaching the Granity Ck track on the true right and wandering back satisfied to our vehicle after a 10hr day.
